🎣Structure vs. Cover

If you’ve ever nodded along when someone says, “They’re holding near structure,” but secretly thought “Is that the log… or the rock ledge?” — you’re not alone. Anglers toss around “structure” and “cover” like they’re the same thing. They’re not, and knowing the difference can avoid a skunked outing.

Structure is the foundation of the lake or river bottom — things that don’t move. Think points, humps, drop-offs, channels, ledges. It’s basically the underwater architecture. Fish use structure the way we use streets and highways: it’s how they travel, stage, and feed.

Cover, on the other hand, is the furniture. Logs, brush piles, weed beds, docks — stuff that provides shade, ambush spots, or protection. Fish use cover like we use couches: a place to hang out, relax, and (if you’re a bass) destroy anything that swims by.

How to Fish Them:

  • On structure, think location. Position yourself along ledges, points, or drop-offs where fish travel. Use presentations that move — crankbaits, swimbaits, or live bait rigs that cover water.

  • On cover, think precision. Drop a jig in front of a log. Flip a Texas rig into the weeds. Cast under that shady dock. You’re knocking on the door, not just driving by.

đź’ˇ Pro Tips:

  • Use electronics (if you’ve got them) to map structure, but let your eyes find cover.

  • Fish love when structure meets cover — like a brush pile on a ledge. That’s the fish equivalent of beachfront property.

  • Don’t overthink it: when in doubt, ask, “Can this thing move?” If yes → cover. If no → structure.

Stop confusing them, and you’ll stop fishing “kinda near the fish” and start fishing right on top of them.

🎣 IN THE FIELD

  • Fall bass are playing hide-and-seek — fishing your go-to summer spots and lures this time of year is like showing up to a costume party in last year's outfit.
Skip those rookie errors: follow the bait, tune into plunging water temps and low-light windows, and your next fall trip could be a success.
