A dull fishing knife is more dangerous than a sharp one—and a lot more frustrating when you're trying to clean your catch before the sun sets. Here’s how to get your blade slicing like new.
Start with the right tool for the job. You don’t need a forge, just one of the following:
Whetstone (a 1000/6000 grit combo is ideal)
Honing rod (for regular maintenance)
Pull-through sharpener (quick and easy option)
Unglazed bottom of a ceramic mug (emergency only)
How to Sharpen with a Whetstone
Soak the stone. Submerge it in water for 10 minutes until bubbles stop rising.
Set the angle. Hold your knife at a 15-degree angle.
Sharpen the first side. Sweep the blade across the coarse side of the stone, base to tip. Do 8–10 strokes.
Switch sides. Repeat on the other side with equal strokes.
Polish the edge. Flip to the fine grit and repeat the process.
Test the blade. Slice paper or shave a sliver off your thumbnail (carefully).
Clean up. Rinse and dry your knife thoroughly to prevent rust.
How to Use a Honing Rod
A honing rod doesn’t sharpen—it realigns the edge between sharpening sessions.
Hold the rod vertically. Place the tip on a cutting board for stability.
Angle the blade. Position your knife at a 20-degree angle to the rod.
Draw the blade down and across. From base to tip, swipe the knife across the rod in a smooth motion.
Repeat on the other side. Do 5 passes per side.
Pro Tips:
Always store your knife in a sheath or blade guard.
Never toss it loose in a tackle box—it’ll dull fast.
